~ The Calumet City Council adopts an ordinance establishing a library on December 22, 1927.

~ The first Library opens in 1930 as a WPA Project located on the second floor of the Masonic Hall at 214-155th Street.

~ Mayor John Jaranowski appoints the first Library Board in 1940 after WPA support for the  Library is withdrawn.

~ In 1945, former  City Attorney Samual Markman donates property at 760 Wentworth Avenue to be used  for Library purposes.

~ A bond issue referendum for $75,000 is approved by the residents of Calumet City for a new library building in 1950, and ground-breaking takes place on December 4th.

~ The new Library  building is completed and officially opens its doors on February 18, 1952. Ten years later, an addition to the building is finished.

~ In 1973, the Library Board, using monies saved from each year’s budget, begins to acquire  property at 153rd Street and Manistee Avenue to be used for a new  Library facility.

~ The City Council approves a bond issue in 1984 for $1,750,000 to assist in the construction of  the new Library, whose total projected cost is $3.5 million. Ground is broken on  August 7, 1984.

~ Less than a year and a half later, on December 2, 1985, the nearly completed 30,000 square foot Library opens its doors to the public.

~ In mid-1994, the Library begins using an automated public access catalog (PAC) that allows  patrons access to in-house holdings, as well as those of other Suburban Library System libraries.

~ Internet access is offered to the public during National Library Week,  April 20, 1998.

~ In partnership with School District 205, the Library launches a website at  www.calumetcitypl.org on November 11, 1998.
