COLLECTION AND SERVICES The Adult Services Department provides for the educational, informational, and recreational needs of patrons through a variety of materials, utilizing both conventional and electronic means. COLLECTION The Adult Services Collection consists of ...... A collection of circulating non-fiction books that has special strength in the areas of Small Business, Automobile repair, Pregnancy and Childbirth, World War II history, Vietnam War history, Cooking, Computers, Spanish Language, Literary criticism, Chicago History, and African-American Literature and History. A collection of circulating Fiction books with special collections of Mysteries, Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Westerns. A collection of approximately 400 different magazines and newspapers. Recent back issues of magazines can be checked out the same way circulating books can be. Older back issues of the Chicago Tribune, the Daily Southtown, and select magazine titles are available on microform. A collection of Reference Books, CD-ROMs, and other materials including..... An extensive Business Reference Collection that includes Crain's Chicago Business, Dun & Bradstreet's, Morningstar's Mutual Funds, Standard & Poor's, Value Line, annual reports, and income tax forms. A Jobs/Careers Collection of resume books, company information, career guides and more for job seekers, career changers, and students. Current telephone directories for the Calumet City and Chicago regions. Nationwide directories are available on CD-ROM and via the Internet. A Consumer Information Collection that includes consumer magazines, buying guides, and automobile price guides. A College Information Collection that contains college catalogs from many colleges, books on degrees, and sources of information on scholarships An extensive vertical pamphlet file of current interest material. Access to on-line and CD-ROM databases such as FIRSTSEARCH, EBSCOHOST MASTERFILE 350 (which indexes and abstracts popular magazines and newspapers), and TOPICSEARCH (a database of articles on "hot" topics that are perfect for school assignments) as well as print magazine indexes such as THE READER'S GUIDE TO PERIODICAL LITERATURE. A New Readers collection of high interest, easy vocabulary books for the beginning adult reader. A Large Print Collection of approximately 4,000 volumes, both fiction and non-fiction. SERVICES The Department offers Reference Service to all patrons, both in-person and by telephone, all the hours the Library is open. More than 32,400 questions were answered in 1997. Call (708) 862-6220 ext 2 to reach the Adult Services Reference Desk during business hours. The Adult Services Department provides Reader's Advisory Services. Access to the Internet for the public can be found in the Department. Also regular introductory classes on using the Internet are sponsored by the Adult Services Department. CLICK HERE FOR INFORMATION USING THE INTERNET AT THE LIBRARY The Adult Services Department sponsors a wide variety of adult programs, including book discussions, travelogues, crafts, reading clubs, and informational seminars. The Adult Services Department provides an Interlibrary Loan service through which patrons may request materials from other libraries. (SEE BELOW) In the Adult Service Department patrons can access the Illinois On-line database, a locator of materials owned by libraries across the state of Illinois, and WorldCat, a locator of materials owned by libraries across the United State . Two typewriters are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the rate of 25 cents per hour. Patrons must be at least 12-years old and must present a current ID. Two study rooms are available for use on a walk-in or reservation basis. Usage is limited to 2 hours per visit, and a current ID is required. To reserve a study room ahead of time (up to one month in advance) contact the Adult Services Reference Desk at (708) 862-6220. The Library keeps current federal and state income tax forms, as well as those for the past 7 years. These forms may be photocopied for 10 cents a page. Applications for Federal Student Loans can be found in the Adult Services Department. The Library presents monthly exhibits in a special display case. If you have a collection you wish to display contact the Adult Services Reference Desk at (708) 862-6220. Microform Reader-Printers are located in the Reference area. Printouts can be made at the cost of 10 cents per page. 3 black-and-white photocopy machines are provided that reduce or enlarge at the rate of 10 cents per page, and one color copier that costs 75 cents a page. The Library provides a V-Tek Magnifying Machine and hand-held magnifiers for the visually impaired. Talking Books and Cassettes for the visually and physically handicapped can be ordered through the BPH Librarian. The librarians in the department can proctor tests for patrons who are taking involved in distance-learning or correspondence courses. INTER-LIBRARY LOAN Inter-library loan allows the patron to borrow materials from libraries other than the Calumet City Public Library. There are three types of ILL requests. 1. SLS Requests - Searches done within the Suburban Library System take 3-7 days. No fee 2. IO Requests - Searches done anywhere in the state of Illinois take 7days - 2 weeks. No fee 3. System Requests - Searches done anywhere in the US and other parts of the world take a minimum of 2-4 weeks. Patrons must agree to pay the search fee before these items are ordered. The $3.00 search fee is charged only if the item is obtained. Requests can be made by phone (708-862-6220) ext.2 or in person at the Adult Services Reference desk. The patron must have a valid Suburban Library System card which has been issued to him by his home library. If the patron does not have one, a card must be obtained before the request will be placed. Overdue fees and fines must be cleared from the patron's account before ILL materials can be checked out. There is a limit of 20 requests per card holder at one time. The patron is called when the items come in. If the ILL staff is unable to obtain the items requested, they will phone the patron or mail a postcard. Some new books and all audio-visual material (CD's, cassettes, records, and videos) can not be renewed. All overdue items are charged a $.25 a day late fee except for videos which are charged $2.00 a day |
