CALUMET CITY PUBLIC LIBRARY

BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP

 The Calumet City Public Library Book Discussion Group meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 2:00 PM.  Copies of the books may be picked up at the Adult Services Reference Desk.

 Wednesday, September 7, the book will be The Pelican Brief  by John Grisham.

 Wednesday, October 5, the book will be Evidence of Things Unseen by Marianne Wiggins.

 Wednesday, November 2, the book will be The Devil in the White City: Murder,

            Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America by Erik Larson.

 Wednesday, December 7, the book will be She’s Come Undone by Wally Lamb.     

BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENINGS

 Staff from Premier Hospice and Home Health will be available for Blood Pressure Screenings from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM on the following Wednesdays:  September 21; October 19; November 16; and December 21.

                                 

                                 BATTLEFIELD BALLADEERS

CIVIL WAR MUSIC

 

Enjoy the music of the 1860s in 2005!   Musicians David Corbett and Paul Watson, the BATTLEFIELD BALLADEERS, will appear in historical costumes on Tuesday, September 20, at 7:00 PM.  Their repertoire includes songs written for the war and also popular music from the minstrel shows.  

 

CPR CLASS

          Saturday, September 24, at 9:30 AM, the Calumet City Professional Firefighters Association will provide CPR Training.  This training covers certification for CPR on infants, children, and adults.  Registration must be done in person along with a $30.00 cash registration fee (training manuals can be purchased for an additional $5.00 at the class). 

GROWING SEASONS

On Wednesday, September 28, at 7:00 PM please join us for a historical slide show presentation and exhibit based on the book, GROWING SEASONS, by Elsie Lee Splear (1906 – 1996).  Carolyn Splear Pratt, the daughter of author, Elsie Lee Splear, will appear in costume to tell the story of life on an Illinois farm in the early 1900s based on the experiences of her mother.   Smithsonian magazine selected Growing Seasons as a Notable Book for Children and Reading Teacher, a publication of the International Reading Association, designated the book as a Teacher’s Choice Book.   Carolyn and her husband, Clayton Pratt, also maintain an educational website [www.growingseasons.com] that has had nearly one million visitors from over one hundred countries.  Bring the whole family!

HOUSING OPTIONS FOR OLDER ADULTS

            Please join us on Tuesday, October 11, at 7:00 PM to explore HOUSING OPTIONS FOR OLDER ADULTS.  Monique James, a representative for the Suburban Area Agency on Aging, will be on hand to discuss the availability of housing in the South Suburban area, what to consider in choosing housing for yourself or a family member, and how to make a successful transition to a new location.

 SENIOR BINGO

             Senior citizens, age 55 or older, are invited to an afternoon of fun and refreshments when we gather for another Senior Bingo Party on Tuesday,

             October 18, at 2:00 PM.  Prizes will be awarded to game winners.  Registration for this activity will be accepted beginning Tuesday, October 4.  Seating is limited. 

 

INTRODUCTION TO

REFERENCE USA

 

            Looking for marketing contacts for your business?  Need additional contacts for job hunting purposes?  Planning a class reunion and need contact information for former classmates?  ReferenceUSA is an Internet-based reference service available at the Calumet City Public Library.   On Wednesday, October 26, at 7:00 PM, Era Speight, a representative of InfoUSA, will demonstrate the basic features of this important resource.

 

The ReferenceUSA database contains detailed information on more than 12 million U.S. businesses and 120 million U.S. households.  Both the Business database and the Residential database can be searched via a Quick Search method or a Customized Search method.  Information on this online database is compiled from public sources including white and yellow pages of telephone directories, annual reports, 10-Ks, and other SEC information.

 

RULES OF THE ROAD

 

Learn the basics of the Illinois Driving Test with personnel from the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office on Thursday, October 27, from 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM.

 WOMEN’S HEART ADVANTAGE

Barbara Ferrari, Heart Health Coordinator at Ingalls Wellness Center, will offer the WOMEN’S HEART ADVANTAGE program on Tuesday, November 29, at 7:00 PM.  This presentation will cover basic consumer health information about the heart and vascular diseases and disorders, ways of managing cardiovascular risk factors and maintaining heart health, and concerns of special significance to women.

 

JAZZ PIANO WITH DAVE HEPLER

 

            Dave Hepler, an Indianapolis jazz pianist, will perform on Thursday, December 8, at 7:00 PM.  The JAZZ PIANO WITH DAVE HEPLER program will include music from his most recent CD, Song for My Father, which features his own compositions as well as songs that were special to his father.  Other CDs recorded by Dave include Birthday Wish, Anomaly, Dave Hepler Tidings, and Dave Hepler 4.

Register for either session time to attend this four-week series.  Activities include stories, songs, a video and craft.

 

Y.A.A.B. Sponsors Art Contest
Age: Students in 5th through 8th grades
Date: Begins Friday, April 1

Do you enjoy painting or drawing?  Do you have an original piece you created and would like to enter in the Young Adult Advisory Board’s Art Contest? Pick up an entry form in Youth Services beginning April 1.  Fill out the form and return it with your art submission.  All entries will be on display during April in Youth Services.  Prizes will be awarded.

 

Design a Book Cover

Pick up a blank book cover at the YS reference desk. Decorate it anyway you wish with crayons, paint, glitter, stickers, etc. and return it to YS to receive a small prize. All book covers will be displayed during April.

This presentation gives parents of students of all ages some tools to use with their children to identify success and how to achieve that success.  We will look at the following: goal setting, time management, organization skills and test anxiety. Test-Taking Skills

This presentation is designed to assist parents of students of all ages, by showing them how to improve their children's test-taking skills.  It gives parents proven, practical tips for helping children approach both multiple-choice and open-ended questions, as well as suggestions for making sure children are physically and emotionally ready to do their best on the day of the test. Motivating Students

7-8:30 PM

During this presentation, we will talk about lighting the fire and keeping it lit in your children.  We will talk about students' abilities and desire to be successful and how to encourage this drive to learn.  In addition, we will share information about different ways people learn and what that means for parents as they work with their children.
